November 2003
The South Downs
31 of the troop chose to complete their Expedition Challenge badge on
a storming (and stormy!) weekend of hiking in November. Older scouts
did it on their own. Younger scouts got shown the lot. Expeditions rule!
The scouts navigated their way along the crest of the South Downs, having
planned their route themselves. They also took care of the rest of the
expedition, sorting all their food at Safeway on the Thursday before.
Weather likes us
Once again, the weather liked Troop B. Whilst our families and friends
experienced flooding and downpours galore in (un)sunny Surrey, we enjoyed
not so wet weather in Sussex. In fact we only had to put waterproofs
on for the last couple of hours, whilst those at home were packing sandbags.
Not that we like to gloat, but, HAH!
South Downs
Remains one of our best expedition venues. Providing nice views, great
walking and a feeling of remoteness (both days involved crossing or
travelling on virtually no roads).
The Seven Sisters
Exhilarating cliff-top walking is where it’s at. Grass ridges
with a mahoosive drop to the sea make for a splendid afternoon's walking
Beachy
Head
Massive cliff above the English Channel. A fitting place to complete
the journey.
Falling cows
We are reliably informed by at least one expedition team that they saw
a cow fall off a cliff at Cuckmere Haven.
Alfriston Youth Hostel
In our top two hostels list. Staff are absolutely fab, rooms comfy, lounge
area is wonderful with mega-Connect-4
Puddle
jumping Another simple, but popular game, to join the Troop B compendium.
Longest jumper is Mark. Wettest jumper is Ben.
Pasta pasta pasta
The scouts are well trained in arranging high-energy low-cost food.
No imagination, but it was the right choice!
McDonald's
Your feet hurt at the end of a two-dayer, and all you want to do is
rest them. But they're never too tired to make it that extra two hundred
yards to McDonald's in Eastbourne town centre.
South Central Trains
You suck! Staff are nice, but could not run a train service in a brewery
we’re afraid. Give us some freebies and we’ll forgive you.
Plumpton
Green Scouts
Very nice group who let us stay in their HQ on the first night. We reckon
you should stay their too as it’s mega convenient for cool hiking
opps.
Arriving back early
It's absolutely unprecedented, and we're investigating as to how it happened
- but Troop B actually returned from an event two hours early!!! Our watches
must be wrong.
All in all a wicked weekend above the sea. In November. With far less
rain than at home. Superb.
