May 2002
Our annual advanced camp during the May half-tem saw our most intrepid
older scouts heading across the sea to Skye. A long long train and car
journey meant we arrived at our campsite in Glenbrittle late on Saturday
evening.
The next day saw some very atmospheric weather on the Isle and we chose
to hike the coastal path from Elgol, from which we gained awesome views
of the Black Cuillin - one of the most visually impressive mountain
ranges in the world.
On Monday we did a full hill day from Sligachan, scrambling our way
to the summits of Sgurr Am Bhastier and Buache na Frithe. The weather
had cleared to bring bright sunshine and clear skies (pleasant as it
was raining heavily back down south!) and we were rewarded with sensational
views out to the Atlantic and the rest of the Isle. After some
drinks in the hotel at the bottom and fish and chips, we then witnessed
one of the most superb sunsets any of us had ever seen (and we've seen
a few) as the sun descended behind Harris at about 10.30pm.
Our final full day involved another campsite next to the sea before
a brilliant morning of sea kayaking out of Uig bay. Paddling alongside
high stacks and cliffs, exploring caves and marveling and the crystal
green waters of the Atlantic. The Whitewave centre then stuffed us with
Brownies before we headed back on our way to Fort William.
A
wild camp in Glen Nevis closed the camp before another long train journey
home. The train ride through the highlands in the sun was a pretty special
way to see out our second Scottish foray of 2002.
Thanks to Martin, Jonny, Josh and Toby who all made the trip a pleasure
for leaders Alison and Ed.
