SCOUTS IN CHARGE

PLs rule the roost for an entire weekend

September 2004

We asked the scouts to plan and run their own patrol camps over a weekend in September. They rose to the challenge and ran some of the finest patrol camping experiences we've ever seen. Here's what happened.

Mega planning

The PLs spent weeks planning every element of their camp in detail, to make sure they got it right. From booking their campsites, to planning the menus, to completing the route plans, to booking the activities and transport - they left no stone unturned and the planning paid off.

Bentley Copse
Mike G and Erez A took their patrol to Bentley Copse, the Surrey County Site. They ran a superb camp including an incident hike, pioneering (they safely constructed a giant swingboat), rifle shooting and more.

Boidier Hurst
Three patrols ran their campsites on the top of Box Hill - Alex H and Peter C, Lewis N and Robert W, Andrew F and Rupert H. Programmes combined hiking, climbing, pioneering, campfires and visits to the Spectrum for ice skating, bowling and swimming. All were totally impressive.

Roverdene
Two patrols, led by James G and Grant M, and Richard W and James C, ran their camps at the excellent Roverdene site atop the North Downs. Climbing, hiking, pioneering and campsite all featured in some very successful camping experiences.

Pioneering
Ranging from a swingboat to a climbing frame to a tower to a bucking bronco, the standards set now are high. Match these up with the pole launching and we have some formidable pioneers amongst us.

Hiking
Scouts hiked out on the North Downs, Pitch Hill, Winterfold Wood, Box Hill and beyond. Clocking up some milage and navigating well, each achieved an objective.

Guildford Spectrum
A fun place to be for swimming, diving, bowling and ice skating. Check us there.

Rock Climbing
Three patrols ran climbing sessions at Stone Farm, with most scouts completing between three and six challenging routes.

Campfires
Big fires to sit around and unwind in the evening - well done.

Cooking it Up
Each patrol planned and cooked their own menu over the weekend. The measure of success is that nobody went hungry and everybody felt they had eaten well.

Scouts in Charge was a firm favourite, and a real credit to all involved. It'll be back.
