July 2002
Over the middle weekend in July the south coast experienced a bit
of a heatwave. Which was useful because we were camping there!
We got the train down to Bournemouth on Friday evening where we met
up with Colin (our leader who lives in Portsmouth) and headed to Butcher's
Coppice campsite for the night.
Saturday morning we got a boat to Brownsea Island and reinacted some
of the original programme from Baden-Powell's first
camp there in 1907. Semaphore, tracking, stalking wide games
and a BBQ all played their part, and staying the
night at the same campsite he used certainly added to the fun!
The following morning we chartered a boat to Swanage where we spent
the day on the beach before speedboating and ringoing along the seafront.
An open top bus ride back to the station in the sun was a perfect end
to a storming weekend.
