September 2003
Venue:
Kibblestone International Scout Camp - massive campsite with big slopes,
awesome swings, big field and woods.
On the buses: We hired two minibuses for this one,
which made life easier, bearing in mind we had a big group. What sucked
was the five and a half hour journey home on Sunday evening, due to heavy
traffic. Thanks for keeping us going
, Radio 1!
Hats off to: The Kibblestone Service Team. Really
helpful, especially when we had forgotten our tent poles, and they provided
some spare tents at one in the morning.
Alton
Towers: We spent a day at the UK's most popular tourist attraction.
Split into groups and went to ride as many of the rides as possible. Air
was the voted the best ride, despite breaking down every time we were
next in line to get on. Oblivion was described by Mark as the scariest
thing he'd ever done (though he loved it all the same). Nemesis, the Black
Hole, etc. were just as good as we'd remembered.
McDonald's: Still remains the most popular option
for a Troop B mealtime.
Assault Course: Record times were set on the Kibblestone
Assault Course. Record levels of mud were also found all over everybody's
clothes and face at the end. An excellent morning's activity.
Viaduct
Abseil: We headed for Miller's Dale to use the old railway viaduct
for an afternoon of abseiling in the sun. Virtually all the group completed
one or two descents in record time, mainly due to the fact that on a viaduct,
once over the edge there's nowhere to put your feet! Landing in the river
was amusing too.
A great weekend, packed with thrills. We'll head back to Alton Towers
and the Peak District sometime in the future for sure - watch this space!
