Mountain Introduction

...and what a great place to start!

May 2002

The May bank holiday weekend brought us some unexpectedly sunny weather. Danny, Erez, Jonny, Toby, Richard, Michael, Alison and Ed all headed for the Brecon Beacons National Park in order to get the scouts out on the hill and experience mountain walking.

Jonny and Toby (two of our mountain veterans) organised the routes and led the group, whilst Danny, Erez and Richard got their first taste of the mountains. Day one involved a short hike to the Devil's Pulpit in the Wye Valley for a bit of bouldering. Day two was a full day atop the Brecon Beacons. Hiking from the northern side of these impressive mountains, we walked the ridge from Corn Du to Pen y Fan to Crybin. Plenty of navigational work and some breathtaking views. A newly invented game of turdball completed the day.

We transferred to a 'wild' campsite near Hiwaun for the final night before going gorge walking on the bank holiday. McDonalds in Mertyr completed a very successful and enjoyable weekend.
