MICROLIGHTING

Hampshire as we've never seen it before...

[Troop B takes to the skies]Going on holiday in a 737 is quite is exciting, going for a flight in a small aeroplane is more exciting still. So actually taking the controls of an aircraft must be amazing, right? Well we can officially confirm to you that it is. Troop B's older scouts and leaders spent a day in sunny Hampshire learning how to fly microlights. We arranged for thirteen of us to spend a day at Popham Airfield learning about flight and how to fly a microlight.

What's a microlight?

Essentially a microlight is a small plane. Traditionally they were hang-gliders with engines, but these days they are very safe, strong machines capable fo flying long distances. They carry one or two people and are very manouvreable.

Haven't I seen one in James Bond?

Sean Connerry flew one in James Bond - it was just like that, but we didn't have any ammo.

Taking the controls?

Yep, once the microlight had taken off, the scouts took the controls all the way through to landing. It was pretty incredible and the scouts thought it was the business. How many of their mates would be going into school on Monday morning being able to say they flew a plane at the weekend?

Sun

It was brilliant sunshine all day, which was excellent as it meant we could see as far as the Isle of Wight from our vantage point 2000ft in the sky.

Going again?
Oh yeah. We've been invited back to camp at the airfield. This was our first air activity for three years, and it's given us the taste for getting airbourne again. We've also arranged some gliding and hopefully paragliding for the not too distant future.

Ladies and gentlmen, the seatbelt lights are switched on...
