2 to 5 May 2003
On the first of the May bank holiday weekends in 2003 the hill-hungry
of the troop headed west to the Brecon Beacons for a themed camp - Mad
About Mountains.
Venue
Dolygaer Scout Campsite - ace location at the foot of the Beacons, next
to a reservoir and complete with train going past the entrance.
Hill
day
We enjoyed a day on the Brecon Beacons - venturing to the summit of Corn
Du. The cloud lifted to give a breathtaking view of the glaciated valleys
and an exhilirating ridge walk took us to the top - unfortunately just
as we got there it lowered again and we were greeted by winds to lift
you off your feet. We thought it best to retreat at this point rather
than carry on, and headed back down to camp to dry off our kit. Everybody
had a great day on the hill, even though we had to cut it short.
Gorge walking
The Sychryd gorge is one of the best in the UK for gorge walking. We found
ourselves clinging onto rocks above raging waterfalls, clambering along
trees, crawling through tunnels, jumping into plunge pools, bombing into
three foot deep mud and more on a crazy day on, in and above the river.
This is simply a brilliant activity, so please point us in the direction
of the next canyon...
Rock
climbing
On an unexpectedly blue skies day we rigged up a few climbs at Dina's
Rock. The scouts effortlessly glided up the crag, and took in the rays
as their final activity on the camp.
Abseiling
We outdid our abseil of two weeks previous (Easter Camp) and set up a
180-footer, which we can tell you is very high indeed. Only for the brave,
which meant everybody - we're gonna have to get ourselves a longer rope...
Stoves
Scouts cooked their meals during the weekend on expedition stoves. We
had done some training on this at our weekly meetings, so this was an
opportunity to put those skills into action.
All in all a great weekend, that left us all a little madder about mountains!
