ABOUT TROOP B
"Who we are, Where we come from"... and a lot more besides!
Troop B is one of the most successful and exciting Scout
Troop's about. We're the pride of 1st Hersham Scout Group in Walton
and Weybridge District, Surrey.
Currently our members are boys aged 10 to 16 who enjoy all types of indoor and (especially) outdoor adventures. They play a large part in planning and organising our programme themselves, supported by a cast of experienced leaders and parent helpers. Troop B is set apart from most by the vast array of adventurous activities offered regularly on our programme. Our Scouts have developed a passion for the outdoors through the events we are able to offer. We use high quality instructors and have negotiated ridiculously low prices. Where else can young people experience the following sort of activities on a regular basis?
We offer the opportunity for taster sessions in a wide variety of outdoor pursuits, with many of these backed up by courses to gain National Governing Body qualifications and awards. Of course we ensure that all instructors used are appropriately trained and experienced.
We also provide a whole host of activities for those who prefer a calmer
life from camping to incident hikes, a visit to an RAF base to cooking
over open fires, night hikes to running round a castle. We highlight and
support each Scout's personal acheivement, whilst promoting teamwork through
the operation of a patrol system - giving Scouts the chance to develop
their leadership potential as a Patrol Leader or Assistant Patrol Leader.
Other leadership opportunities exist as the Scouts run activities, programme
items or act as an assistant leader at one of the Cub Packs or Beaver
Colonies for a period of time.Naturally we offer an varied weekly programme combining active, creative, cultural and educational items geared towards offering our members new skills and developing them through the Scout Association's Progressive Training Scheme - click here to visit the Troop Meetings page for further information. Recently our Senior Patrol Leader gained the highest award in the Scout section - the Chief Scout's Award - and there are many Scouts following in his footsteps. Unlike some Troops, our Scouts pick their own route through the award scheme - giving an increased sense of achievement and offering more personally challenging goals. We also try to do all we can to help in the local community. Troop B has a tradition of camping and getting out & about in some of the most varied (and often spectacular) locations in the UK - venues have included The Wye Valley, Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia, Surrey Hills, South Downs, Glen Coe, Somerset, Staffordshire, Glen Nevis, Hertfordshire, Loch Lomond and on the Ridgeway in Wiltshire. We sometimes camp lightweight, as a self-sufficient patrol area, bivouac (constructing our own shelters), stay in youth hostels, stay in other Scout HQs and we've even be known to just crash under the stars. Troop B going whereever it takes to do the best activities? You'd better believe it! To
find out what we've been up to recently visit the B
Active page.In a nutshell, we aim to provide a fun, active, challenging programme, that gives young people confidence, independence and skills to work with others in a variety of situations. We want them to meet new challenges and discover the abilities they never knew they had. We hope that they'll have been able to experience all sorts of adventures and appreciate the outdoors just as we do. To this end we believe we deliver our promise to an exceptional standard. 1st Hersham is a very strong group consisting of 2 Beaver Colonies (ages 6 - 8), 2 Cub Packs (ages 8 - 10) and 2 Scout Troops (ages 10 - 15). It also supports K2 Explorer Scouts (ages 14-18), one of many Explorer units in our District, and many leaders are part of Surrey Scout Network (ages 18-25). Membership is open to any boy of an appropriate age (you can join directly to any section - no previous experience is needed). For further details of joining please e-mail info@troopb.com or fill in our feedback form. Scouting is always on the lookout for adult volunteers to do anything from running and helping to provide adventurous activities to providing support in the background - there really is a role to suit you!
