EASTER CAMP 2003

Pre-summer-term frolics in the Wye Valley

Easter weekend saw a great camp taking advantage of the wide array of activities available in the stunning Wye Valley. Enjoy.

Snowboarding
We were like gnarly dudes for a morning of snowboarding. Learning how not to fall over was the most important bit, but the jumps were more fun.

Abseiling
The camp was completed when the five most intrepid scouts took part in the boldest abseil we've ever done! 130ft high above the River Wye, with a cheeky overhang near the top. And it was sunny.

Rock climbing

Every scout completed some or all of the many climbs we rigged at Symonds Yat. We used the Introductory Rocks area because there are routes here for all levels - we did everything from Difficult to Severe grades as people tried their best to do spiderman impressions.

Night hike

Our first activity in the Forest itself was a night hike through the woods, up to the church in Parkend - probably the scariest church in the world at night. Not only is it at the end of a very long path and got a very dark graveyard. It also has a gate that slams shut on its own and loud bell that strikes when you wander past. We walked pretty quickly here.

Kayaking

A good session was had by all splashing about in the Wye. Despite the chilly weather, just about all had a great laugh in the River. Some managed to do half an Eskimo roll too.

Mountain Biking

The Forest of Dean is quite clearly designed for mountain bikers. Lots of interesting trails - some fast, some rocky, some windy, some steep - all great when you do them in a loop. Between the two groups we rode just about all of the technical FODCA Trail - a purpose designed route through the forest for hardcore mountain bikers - like us.

Hiking

High above the River Wye we hiked about Wintour's Leap and to the rail tunnel at Bang-y-Gor. Nice day for it too to be out and about.

Football

There's a nice green in Parkend, complete with goal posts, which served host to two marathon football matches during our stay. Some cracking goals, and saves.

All in all an awesome four days - we'll be back...
