B EXTREME

Scenario-based survival, plus a whole lot more...

[Preparing dinner]October 2003. Read on to find out more.

eXtreme dates

Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October 2003

eXtreme venue

Polyapes Scout Campsite, Cobham

eXtreme sunshine

Our insistance on it being sunny whenever we camp continued, as we were treated to two fabulous blue skies days.

eXtreme cold

It did drop to minus four at night however! We don’t mind though – our sleeping bags are quite good.

eXtreme theme

A camp of extremes – a bit of survival, a bit of pioneering, a few surprises.

eXtreme scenario

We ran the camp with a scenario for scouts to follow – this time they were the secret service on a mission to retrieve the black box from a crashed plane. Their only contact had just been found dead! The scouts seemed to find the scenario thing added a bit of spice…

[Bedtime - 6 feet above the ground!] eXtreme tents

Our scenario took the scouts following grid references around Oxshott (in the dark) to retrieve the various parts of their tents. Tip: turn RIGHT out of the campsite entrance!

eXtreme sleeping

On Saturday we challenged the scouts to sleep that evening at least six feet off the ground. Armed with only some pioneering poles, pallets, a few table tops, rope and a tarpaulin, the scouts constructed three very comfy and stable shelters. All above head height - best nights sleep in ages!

eXtreme runway

We spent Sunday putting together yet another awesome Troop B aerial runway (always drawing spectators). Pioneering Guru Colin directed construction and we soon had a mega fast descent from the top of a tree to the bottom of the hill. The scouts seemed to think flying through the trees (literally) was the best thing since, well, er, sleeping eight foot off the ground…

[Our 'cooker' for the weekend]eXtreme fires

We built a massive fire that lasted the entire weekend which did the job for warmth, light and cooking.

eXtreme food

We ate well this weekend – including a backwoods banquet on Saturday night. Stuffed chickens, cheesy jacket potatoes, vegetable soup, choccy bananas – just the job.

eXtreme wide games

No Troop B camp would be complete without some awesome large-scale widegames, and this was no exception.

eXtreme lashings

Would you believe it, across the weekend, we did over two thirds of a kilometres of lashings! That’s got to be some sort of a record! That's the height of Tryfan from the A5 to the summit.

eXtreme first camp

For Michael S, Christian and Tom, this was their first camp – and they did brilliantly. Well done guys!

eXtreme thank-you's

A big thank you to Alan, Colin, Matt and James for leading the weekend – Ed being ill meant they had to take the reigns for most of it. Also thanks to Malcolm for driving all the kit down in his van!

B eXtreme turned out to be a great success, and definitely something we’ll look to repeat. Be very prepared… we're trying to find some higher trees.
