B ACTIVE: 2003
The adventure keeps on coming!
2003 saw Troop B move from strength to strength. As we
grew used to the new age ranges for Scouts and Explorer Scouts, our
program adapted well and we had our most exciting year ever! The highlight
for many was our Summer Camp in Switzerland,
although everyone has their personal favourite amongst the dozens of
activities from this year. Read on to find out more!
GRAND
PRIXMAS - December 2003We rounded off 2003 with a brilliant day of karting in Andover. 40 of us spent 4 1/2 hours racing around one of the premier indoor circuits in the UK, complete with tunnel and flyover. Definitely some future Formula 1 drivers out there - so keep an eye on your rear view mirror. Read the report here. XMAS, B STYLE - December 2003 Our annual Christmas party lived up to its outrageous and messy reputation. Games such as bread bomb, splat the leader, slap the jelly and baguette wars all featured and nobody went home with clean car seats. It rocked and we managed to clean the hall in record time - home before 2am is quite a feeling.
31 Troop B members descended on the South Downs for the weekend, splitting into smaller groups to complete the Expedition Challenge. Stormy weather and fun were both the order of the day - click here for the report along with some photo's of the event. GHOST HUNT - October 2003 On a very cold, dark and wet night over the October half-term we congregated at Newlands Corner on the top of the North Downs for our Ghost Hunt. It was Halloween this week after all. Taking in such ludicrously haunted places as St. Martha's Hill, the old pill box, Chilworth Gunpowder Works and Silent Pool - a few stories and legends were told at each - we were suitably 'chilled' by the end of it. Luckily hot dogs and hot chocolate at the end helped everyone recover! A great, though frightening evening - who was that lady in the white dress at Silent Pool? We entered the October half-term with a new type of camp - scenario based with plenty of interesting projects for the 22 scouts that attended to get their teeth into. Sleeping 8 feet off the ground was pretty amazing, flying down our eXtreme aerial runway was even better! Read the report on nights off the ground, zip wires, fire food and more here. ![]() HERSHAM
CHALLENGE - October 2003We challenged the scouts to make their way around a circuit in Hersham in patrols and complete 7 varied challenges. From face painting, to tent pitching, to initiative exercises - the scouts got it all done and had a great time. Falcons the winners with 85 points. HOVERCRAFTING
- September 2003Our friends at the Hovercrafting Club of Great Britain invited us to join them for a day of Hovercrafting a short drive away in Reading. Scouts got the ride of their life, roaring around the field, before getting the chance to take control and fly these amazing craft themselves. We've been invited to enter a racing team in the Nationals, so watch this space! We kicked off the autumn with an action-packed weekend in the Peak District National Park. Alton Towers, assault course and abseiling made us very happy indeed. Read the report. An utterly brilliant twelve day alpine adventure. The troop could be found climbing, white water rafting, mountain walking, swimming and more - with the most spectacular backdrop going in Kandersteg. Click here to read the report - unmissable! SUMMER HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES - August 2003 Troop B meets right through the school holidays. This summer we could be found swimming at Coral Reef in Bracknell, rock climbing, playing golf at the driving range and running round on a scavenger hunt. STONE
FARMERS - August 2003Our local crag welcomed us for an evening of climbing and a BBQ. Stone Farm has loads of routes for all abilities, and it's a firm favourite with us. KNEEBOARDING & WAKEBOARDING - July 2003 We finished off the summer term with an evening on the cable ski - kneeboarding and wakeboarding. It was lovely and warm, which made carving gnarly wakes and going over the jumps that much more enjoyable! 1ST HERSHAM SCOUT GROUP 90th BIRTHDAY - July 2003 Our group's 90th birthday was celebrated in style with an awards event at the HQ. It was rammed, with standing room only as parents, ex-members and our current scouts came to join the party. END
OF TERM ACTIVITY DAY: DORSET - July 2003A last-minutre reshuffle saw us heading down to Dorset for yet another sunny day out. We laid on a plethora of seaside activities including catamaran sailing, powerboating and sea kayaking. A chill out on Swanage beach was vital! WALTON FIRS ACTIVITY WEEKS - July 2003 Two weeks running of wall-to-wall activities at our local campsite. Scouts tried abseiling, shooting, the assault course, pioneering and learned axes and saws skills. MALVERN
CHALLENGE - June 2003Our first time at this event - it definitely won't be out last! Storming weather, loads of activities, Kylie and good food. Our report will be here soon, meanwhile the official Malvern Challenge website is here. BBQ & BUNGEE - June 2003 We had about 80 folk join us on a sunny Sunday afternoon for a BBQ, drink and go on our rocket-charged bungee run - our biggest yet. Soaking, sunny and tasty. Join us next year! Our annual Advanced Camp once again took us north of the border for some mountain action - biking, scrambling, winter walking (in May?!!!), gorge walking. Read the report. EVENING MTB - May 2003 We headed out into Oxshott and Esher woods for some sunset trails on our mountain bikes. Single-track and jumps were in order, and it whet the appetite for further MTB in Switzerland. Every May we head to the hills for a mini-mountain adventure. This time that meant a four day adventure in the Brecon Beacons. The scouts learned and practised mountain walking skills, gorge walking, rock climbing and a truly outrageous abseil. Click here to read the report. HOUSES
OF PARLIAMENT VISIT - April 2003How better to spent the last day in the Easter Holidays than visiting probably the most important building in the country (besides our Scout hut naturally): The Houses of Parliament? We got a pretty exclusive tour of the House of Commons and House of Lords, touched Churchill's foot and stood at the place where Tony Blair stands every week. We
then barged past the tourists and through the gates to go and knock
on the door of Number 10 before heading for an afternoon at the Imperial
War Museum. Thanks to all those who helped make
the day happen! EASTER CAMP - April 2003 Snowboarding, climbing, MTB, hiking, kayaking and a 130 foot abseil above the river Wye?! All this and more on our fantastic Easter Camp in the Forest of Dean. We've got some great pictures of it all to boot! Check out the report here. Did somebody mention 'ghost hike'? DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY - April 2003 Troop B were victorious across the board at the District cross-country race! This new event was combined with a promise renewal ceremony at nearby Walton Firs campsite. Congratulations to Toby, Alex H and Ollie for winning their respective age ranges - we expect to hear from the Olympics selection committee shortly. RAPIDLY
DOWNHILL MTB - March 2003Troop B once again ruled the North Downs with a superb weekend of off-road mountain biking. Mud was the order of the day as younger scouts were taught the basics whilst more experienced members had the opportunity to put their skills to the test! Click here for pictures and more info. FENCING
COURSE - Feb 2003Wednesday nights for the past couple of months saw several Troop B members brandishing face masks and swords - all in the name of sport! This great fencing course was rounded off by a thrilling final-night competition. Well done to everyone who completed the course, and have now gained their Master-at-Arms badge. LANDYACHTING
- Jan 2003Troop B returned to Brean for another day of fun sailing on the beach. Superb conditions made for a good session where experienced Scouts were able to become proficient whilst the many 'new faces' were able to try it for the first time! We look forward to returning there in the future. LONDON
EXPERIENCE II - Jan 2003Building on last year's successful trip to the capital, loads of Troop B Scouts were joined by some members from Oatlands for a weekend of fun and adventure in the city. Click here for a report! GILWELL ALTERNATIVE - Jan 2003 Winter Camp at Gilwell Park was fully booked - so we put on a replacement weekend of activities as only Troop B could. Absieling, climbing, shooting, bowling - a great way to kick off the new year! More info here.
